Summary
Description
Bellinzona, on St. Gothard Route, matching H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 7, page 276, item 3. The mountain outlines, crenellated towers and diagonal wall, chimney smoke, foreground roof and vine trellis, stepped left recess and engraved strokes match. The complete composition, frame and original printed caption are retained. The rectangular crop retains the original printed article text in the stepped recess; no missing artwork or artificial paper was invented. The Burlingame Public Library stamp below this area remains intact on the unchanged full source scan, available at the source links; it is outside this cropped engraving and caption. The exact engraved design is confirmed; the artist, engraver and physical copy used for the album cutting are not independently established here.
From Harper's New Monthly Magazine, vol. LVII, no. 341, October 1878, p. 657 (New York: Harper & Brothers). The issue opening prints No. CCCXLI, October 1878 and Vol. LVII; the bound title page prints June to November 1878. The exact source leaf/page mapping identifies original camera exposure 673 as p. 657. The date of this impression does not establish when the scrapbook leaf was assembled.
