Summary
Description
Vespasian and Judaea Capta coin. Exact pair of engraved coin illustrations corresponding to H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 9, page 100, item 1. The laurelled head and abbreviated Vespasian inscription at the left, with the palm tree, seated figure, shields and IVDAEA CAPTA legend at the right. Both complete circular borders are retained. The matching profiles, contours, lettering and interior details establish the same matrix.
The Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated, volume 63, November 1876, printed p. 363, article Portraits and History in Coins, pp. 361–364. The article is signed Robert Morris, LL.D., on p. 364; this prose byline is not an established engraver credit. The November date is printed in the running head on p. 364, and the year on the illustrated pages. There is no individual printed caption under these diagrams. The exact printing is confirmed; no claim is made about the first appearance or the physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting.
