Summary

Description

A Warning — a complete two-row, ten-panel comic in Puck, vol. VI, no. 137, 22 October 1879, printed p. 523 (PDF page 5), published by Keppler & Schwarzmann, New York, as printed on the issue cover. The small monogram at the top left is retained; no artist's name is expanded from it without verification.

Matches the eight retained panels at the bottom of H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 10, page 123, item 3. The album omits the first panel of each row (“What lovely perfume!” and “Oh, Heavens!”), leaving the next four in each row in the same sequence. The woman's letter, expressions and gestures, the man's spectacles, moustache, pen, torn paper and coat hatching, and all eight surviving captions agree exactly. The source shown here includes the original title, subtitle, all ten panels and their captions. This is one complete strip composition, not ten independent illustrations. The particular physical printing used for the album cutting and earliest publication beyond this witness are not established. The album's handwritten annotations are not part of the external printed strip and remain only in the unchanged album material.

Internet Archive, Serials in Microfilm, item sim_puck_1879-10-22_6_137, ark:/13960/t8vc08h7z, digitized from microfilm IA1630702-01, box IA1630702, scanning centre Cebu, 400ppi. The exact current record was checked 5 November 2026; the printed cover independently supplies vol. VI / no. 137 / 22 October 1879 and the printed target page supplies folio 523. The archive's generic Publisher field says Open Court Publishing Co; the actual 1879 issue cover instead prints Keppler & Schwarzmann, which is used here. No unsupported institutional holding-library attribution is added.

Thank you to Internet Archive for preserving the periodical and freely supplying the microfilm scan. This is a monochrome processed microfilm representation; it does not recover the natural colour of the printed paper and is not digitally colourized. Its original bold linework and captions remain legible.

Rights

Historical comic published in the United States in 1879, public domain there by age. The exact freely accessible archive record and digitization provenance were checked; no Creative Commons licence, CC0 or institutional Public Domain Mark is invented for this scan. This file faithfully reproduces an old printed page from the archive's microfilm digitization, without creative restoration or use of a modern seller's photograph. Source and digitizer credit are retained.
