Summary

Description

1. Europe — one of four separate engravings under the shared title Hunting Trophies of the Four Continents in Harper's Weekly, vol. XX, no. 1018, 1 July 1876, printed p. 537. Printed marks J. Smit and Pearson Sc. are retained as they appear; Sc. denotes the engraver's role. No unverified expansion of either name is supplied.

Matches item 1, Europe, on H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 11, page 413. The hanging antlers and skins, large bison head low in the centre, small pale head at the foot, right-hand arrangement and engraved strokes match. The subjects are arranged hunting trophies: preserved heads, horns, skulls and skins, rather than a group of living animals. This file retains the complete individual composition, signature/engraver marks and numbered original caption. It does not include the other three compositions or the adjoining article. The four engravings are separate matrices and follow the album order Europe, Asia, Africa, America. The particular physical copy used for the album cutting and earliest publication beyond this exact witness remain unestablished.
