On the first day of October, 1868, Bro. Andres Cassard was constituted
Grand Patron of the Order, and appointed General Representative
and Deputy, ''ad hoc'', in all matters and things concerning the Order
of the Eastern Star, with full power and authority to confer the Eastern
Star degrees upon the wives, widows, mothers, sisters, and daughters
of Master Masons in good and regular standing, in the Islands of the
Antilles, Mexico, South and Central America, Italy, Spain, and all
countries, cities, and places, and wherever the Spanish language is
spoken, and with authority to establish Chapters of the Order in
those countries. | |||
Bro. Cassard was also duly authorized to appoint Vice or Associate
Grand Patrons. In the performance of this special duty he did authorize
and appoint from among the ablest and most distinguished members
of the Masonic fraternity in South America a number of Associate
Grand Patrons. | |||
In 1876, Bro. Cassard, in his travels through South America, established
the Order in Brazil, Buenos Ayres, and Montevideo, which have been
productive of much good, particularly in Brazil, where the Order has
been the medium of manumitting hundreds of slaves.
On the 8th of March last, Bro. Andres Cassard appointed, with our
concurrence, Dr. David E. Dudlay,{{Style S-HPB SB. HPB note|*}} a Deputy Grand Patron,
with ample authority to confer the degrees upon worthy and qualified
persons, and establish Chapters in Egypt, China, Japan, Philipian
Islands, Singapore, Calcutta, Bombay, and several of the chief towns
on the Island of Java. And thus are we enabled, with the assistance
of generous friends and a never-tiring perseverance, to establish this
glorious Order, the brilliant emblem of the Star of Bethlehem, in all
parts of the world. | |||
