| | |description=American military man. While at school, invented the game of baseball, 1839, a claim substantiated by a 1907 commission chaired by Col. A. G. Mills. Served throughout the Civil War, 1861-65, including at Fort Sumter, Antietam and Gettysburg, where his heroic role is commemorated by a bronze statue unveiled in 1917. Joined the Theosophical Society soon after its formation and became a staunch friend of the Founders; after their departure for India he was made President ''pro tem'' in the U.S.A., with W. Q. Judge as Secretary, and on April 17, 1880, was elected Vice-President of the Theosophical Society. {{ctd-source|BCW|1|459-461}}. | ||
