English-born Spiritualist medium, lecturer, editor and author, active mainly in the United States and later in England. Elected a Councillor of the Theosophical Society at its organizing meeting in New York on 7 September 1875; some of the Society's early meetings were held at her home. She left the Society within a few months and later became openly hostile to H. P. Blavatsky. Author of ''Modern American Spiritualism'' (1870), ''Art Magic'' (1876) and ''Nineteenth Century Miracles'' (1884) — the last being a principal surviving source on the founding of the Theosophical Society. Founder of the Spiritualist journal ''The Two Worlds'' (Manchester). A city in Egypt which was sacred to the cats, and where was their principal shrine. Many hundreds of thousands of cats were embalmed and buried in the grottoes of Beni‐Hassan‐el Amar. The cat being a symbol of the moon was sacred to Isis, her goddess. It sees in the dark and its eyes have a phosphorescent lustre which frightens the night‐birds of evil omen.
