Description

Jungle Wallahs. One engraving from Scenes in Southern India, published in The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, 28 November 1874, p. 212. Six people seated or standing in a wooded setting. The composition matches the upper-right panel of the collage on H. P. Blavatsky's Scrapbooks, volume 1, page 81, item 1. The album clipping shows only part of the full composition. The artist and engraver have not been identified.

JPEG, 1918 × 1263 pixels. Prepared from the unchanged 3286 × 4845 full scan, image bsb11305745_00220. Orthogonal rotation 90 degrees clockwise without resampling was followed by one bicubic perspective alignment and crop. Frame corners in the upright 4845 × 3286 master, clockwise from the top left: (2500,1918), (4388,1950), (4383,3090), (2505,3051). Manual measurement uncertainty is approximately 3 pixels.

The complete engraved composition, printed frame, original caption and small paper margins are retained. No enlargement, added background, colour or tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. The paper tone and the scan's colour artefacts remain. Dating and limitations

The printed leaf is dated 28 November 1874. The catalogue's 1875 date describes the bound volume spanning 1874–1875. This identified publication is not asserted to be the first publication of the matrix. The 25 November 1875 date of the unrelated article on the album page does not date this image.
