Having received a letter from my compatriot, Mme Helena Blavatsky, in which she informed me of the bad state of her health and begged me to come see her at Elberfeld, I decided to make this journey. But since the state of my own health forced me to take certain precautions, I preferred to stop in Brussels, that I had never before seen, to rest, the heat being overwhelming. I left Paris on the 24th of August; the next morning, at the "Grand Hotel" of Brussels. {{Style S-Lost|}} I encountered Mlle. Justine Glinka {{Style S-Lost|}} whom she knows and esteems highly, she decided to accompany me. We passed the day together, confidant to leave the next day by train at 9 o'clock in the morning. A 8 o'clock, being already completely ready to leave, I went to Mlle Glinka's room and found her in a great embarrassment – her keys, that she has the habit of keeping always with her in a small bag and that she had in this bag when she went to bed, had disappeared during the night, although the door to her room was locked; so too all her chains were locked – impossible to pack up the things she was going to use. We were obliged to put back our departure until the train at 1 hour after noon and [to have] the locksmith come to open the largest trunk.  When it was opened, all the keys that we sought, were found in the bottom of the trunk, <u>as well as the key to this trunk that was attached as usual with the others</u>. Having to ourselves the entire morning, we wanted to take a walk, but suddenly I felt a strange state of weakness and cold with an irresistible need to sleep. I made my excuses to Mlle Glinka and retired to my room, hurrying to the bed. But I could not sleep and keep my eyes closed when suddenly, in a state of vigilance, I saw behind my closed eyes a whole series of unknown landscapes which are engraved in my memory with their smallest details. When this vision was dispelled I felt my weakness abated and went to Mlle Glinka, to whom, certainly, I recounted the landscapes in all their details. We left for the one o'clock train – and here it is that after a quarter-hour of travel, Mlle Glinka says to me looking out the window, "Hold on, here is one of your landscapes!"

I recognized it instantly and until evening saw again, eyes open, all that I had seen that morning with eyes closed.  I was glad that I recounted my vision in detail to Mlle Glinka; because she could attest to its realization. It must be stated that the route between Brussels and Elberfeld is completely unknown to me, because it was the first time of my life that I visited Belgium and this part of Germany.

Arriving at Elberfeld in the evening we stopped at a hotel and hastened to go to Mme. Blavatsky in the house of Mme  Gebhard. The same evening the members of the Theosophical Society, who surround Mme Blavatsky showed us two superb oil portraits of the "Mahatmas" Moria and Koot-Hoomi. The portrait of Moria above all produced in us an extraordinary impression and it is not surprising that on returning to the hotel we spoke again and had it before our eyes. It is up to Mlle Glinka to describe what she saw and felt the following night. But here is what happened to me.

Tired from the journey I slept peacefully until suddenly I was awakened by a hot and penetrating breath. I open my eyes – and in the dim light, that entered the room through three windows, I see before me a large figure of a man dressed in a long, flowing white garment. At the same time I heard or felt a voice that told me, I cannot specify in which language, that I understood perfectly, to light the candle. I must say that {{Style S-Lost|}} I remained quiet, except that I felt my heart beating with redoubled strength. I lit the candle and in lighting it <u>I saw that it was two</u> in the morning. The vision did not disappear: there was a very living man who was in front of me and I instantly recognized in him the beautiful original of the portrait that we had seen that evening. He sat near me on a chair and began to speak to me. He spoke a long time touching the questions that interest me, but most of the interview cannot be reported here, because it concerned very personal things. I can say however among other things he told me that to see him in his astral body I had to go through a lot of preparations and that the last lesson was given to me that very morning, when I saw with closed eyes the landscapes that I was to see again in reality the same day. Then he told me that I have a great magnetic force developing. So I was asking what to do with this force. But without responding he disappeared. I was alone, the door to my room was locked. I screamed at a hallucination and even said to myself with dread that I begin to lose my mind. I hardly had this idea, when I again saw in the same place <u>the man, superb with white garments, he nodded his head and smiling told me</u> – "But you may see for certain that I am not a hallucination and that your reason does not leave you; Blavatsky will pronounce tomorrow in front of everyone that my visit was real."

Then he disappeared. I verified on my watch that it was three o'clock. I extinguished the candle and immediately fell into a profound sleep.

In the morning, arriving with Mlle Glinka at Mme Blavatsky, the first thing that she says to us  with her enigmatic smile:

"Well: how have you passed the night?"

"Very well, – I answered her; and I added: You have nothing to tell me?"

"No, she said, I know only that the master Moria has been to you with one of his students."

The evening of the same day Mr. Olcott found in his pocket a little note that the theosophists recognized being in the handwriting of Moria conceived in these terms:

"Certainly I was there, but who can open his eyes to what he does not want to see. – Moria"

It was the answer to my unbelief, since all day long I had tried to convince myself that it was only an hallucination, that angered Mme Blavatsky. I must say that when I came back to Paris from Elberfeld my hallucinations and strange facts that surrounded me are completely dissipated.

Ayant reçu une lettre de ma compratiote, Mme Helene Blavatsky, dans laquelle elle m'informait du mauvais état de sa santé et me priait de la venir voir à Elberfeld, je me suis décidé à faire ce voyage. Mais puisque l'état de ma propre santé me forçait à certains ménagements , J'ai préferé m'arretér à Bruxelles, que je n'avais jamais vu, pour me reposer, la chaleur étant accablante. Je suis parti de Paris le 24 Août; le lendemain matin, au "Grand Hôtel" de Bruxelles. {{Style S-Lost|}} j'ai rencontré Mlle Justine Glinka ({{Style S-Lost|}} et demoiselle d'honneur de l'Impératrice de Russie). En apprenant que je me rendais à Elberfeld pour voir Mme Blavatsky, qu'elle connait et estime beaucoup, elle s'est décidée à m'accompagner. Nous avons passé la journée ensemble, confidant partir le lendemain par le train de 9 heures de matin. À huit heures, étant déja complètement prêt à partir, j'entre chez Mlle Glinka et je la trouve dans un grand embarras – ses clefs, qu'elle a l'habituale de garder toujours sur elle dans an petit sac et qu'elle a eu dans ce sac en se couchant, avaient disparu pendant la nuit, quoique la porte de sa chambre fut fermée à clef; ainsi toutes ses mailles étant fermées – impossible d'emballer les effets dont elle venait de se servir. Nous sommes obligés de remettre notre départ jusqu'au train de 1 heure apres midi et {{Style S-Lost|fimes}} venir le serrurier pour ouvrir la plus grand de malle. Lorsqu'elle fut ouverte, toutes les clefs que nous cherchions, se trouviens au fond de la malle, <u>ainsi que la clef de cette malle attachée comme d'habitude avec les autres</u>. Ayant à nous toute notre matinée, nous voulumes faire une promenade, mais soudains je me sentir dans un etat d'etrange faiblesse et en froic à un irresistable besoin de dormir. Je me suis excusé auprès de Mlle Glinka et me suis retiré dans ma chambre, m'empressant de me mettre au lit. Mai je ne peu m'endormir et resterir les yeux fermés lorsque tout a coup, dans l'état de veille, j'ai vue devant mes yeux fermés toute une serie de paysages inconnu, qui se sont gravés dans ma mémorie avec leurs moindres détails. Lorsque cette vision fut dissipée je me sentis cessi de ma faiblesse et me rendis auprès de  Mlle Glinka, à laquelle, certainement, j'ai raconté les paysages dans tous leurs détails. Nous sommes partis pour le train d'une heure – et voici qu'après une demi heure de route, Mlle Glinka me dit en regardant par la fenêtre: "Vener, voici un de vos paysages!"

Je l'ai reconnu à l'instant et jusqu'aux soir j'ai revu, les yeux ouverts, tout ce que le matin j'avais vu les yeux fermés. J'etait content d'avoir raconté ma vision en détail à Mlle Glinka; car elle pouvait en attester le réalisation. Il faut dire que la route entre Bruxelle et Elberfeld m'est complètement inconnue, car il était la prémière fois de ma vie que je visitais la Belgique et cette partie de l'Allemagne.

En arrivant à Elberfeld le soir, nous nous sommes arrêtés dans an hôtel et n[ou]s. n[ou]s. hôtames de n[ou]s. rendre auprès de Mme Blavatsky dans la maison de Mme Gebhard. Le même soir les membres de la Société théosophique, qui entourens Mme Blavatsky n[ou]s. ont montré deux superbes portraits a d'huils des "Mahatmas" Moria et Koot-Hoomi. Le portrait de Moria surtout produisit sur n[ou]s.  une impression extraordinaire et ce n'est pas étomant qu'en revenant a notre hôtel n[ou]s. en parlions encore et l' avions devant nos yeux. C'est à Mlle Glinka de raconter ce qu'elle a vu et senti pendant la nuit suivante. Mais voici ce que m'est arrivé.
Fatigué par le voyage je dormais paisiblement lorsque tout d'un coup je fus reveillé par la sensation d'un soufflé bien chaud et pénétrant. J'ouevre les yeux – et dans la faible clarté, qui penetait dans la chambre par les trois fenêtres, je vois devant moi une grande figure d'homme vêtée d'un long vêtement blanc et flottant. En même temps j'ai entendri ou senti une voix qui me disait, je ne puis préciser en quelle langue, bien que je le compris parfaitement, d'allumer la bougie. Je dois dire qu'on lieu {{Style S-Lost|}} je restais tout à fait tranquil, seulement je sentis mon coeur battre avec une force redoublée. J'ai allumé la bougie et en l'allumant <u>j'ai vu à ma montre qu'il était de deux heures</u> du matin.  La vision ne disparaissait pas: s'était un homme bien vivant qu'était devant moi et j'ai reconnu à l'instant même en lui le bel original du portrait, que n[ou]s. avons vu le soir. Il s'assit près de moi sur une chaise et commença à me parler. Il parla longtemps touchant les questions qui m'interessent, mais la plus grande partie de cet entretien ne peut être rapporté ici, car il s'agissait de choses tout à fait personelles. Je puis dire cependant entre qu'il m'a annoncé que pour le voir dans son corps astral j'ai dû passer par beaucoup de préparations et que la derniere <u>leçon</u> me fut donné le matin même, lorsque j'ai vu les yeux fermes les paysages que je devais revoir en réalite le même jour. Puis il me dit que je possêde une grande force magnetique en voie de developpement. Alors je jui demandais ce que je devais faire avec cette force. Mais sans repondre il disparait. J'était seul, la porte de ma chambre était fermée à clef. J'ai crie à une hallucination et même je me suis dit avec effroi, que je commence à perdre la tête. A peine ai-je eu cette idée, que j'ai revu à la même place <u>l'homme, superbe avec vetements blancs, il hochait la tête et en souriant me dits</u>. Mai voyez sûr que je ne suis pas une hallicination et que votre raison ne vous quitte pas; Blavatsky vous prononça demain devant tout le monde qui ma visite était réelle.

Puis il disparait. J'ai constaté a ma montre qu'il était trois heures. J'ai éteint la bougie et me suis rendormi immédiatement d'un profond sommeil.

Le matin, en arrivant avec Mlle Glinka près {{Style S-Lost|}} Mme Blavatsky, la premiere chose qu'elle nous dit avec son sourire enigmatique.
"Eh bien! comment avez-vous passe la nuit?" 
"Très bien, – lui ai-je réponder; et j'ai ajouté: Vous n'avez rien à me dire?
"Non, fit elle, je sais seulement que le maître Moria à été chez vous avec un de ses élèves."

Le soir du même jour Mr. Olcott à trouvé dans sa poche un petit billet que tous les théosophes ont reconnu pour être de l'écriture de Moria conçu en ces termes:
"Certainemen j'étais là, mais qui peut ouvrir les yeux à celui qui ne veut pas voir – Moria"

C'était la reponse à mon incrédulité, puisque toute la journée je tâchais de me persuader que ce m'était qu'une hallucination, ce que fachait Mme Blavatsky. Je dois dire qu' à freine revenu à Paris d'Elberfeld mes hallucinations et ces faits étrangers qui m'entourdient se sont complètement dissipés.

Vsevolod S. Solovyov was a Russian resident of Paris. He was asked by H. P. Blavatsky to pay her a visit to Elberfeld. He ran into Justine Glinka, who decided to travel with him. See the [[:tsw-en:Mahatma_Letter_to_H._S._Olcott_-_Solovyov|letter from Morya to Olcott]] dated August 27 1884. The account given here was presumably written to HPB's sister Vera, with whom Solovyov regularly corresponded. It seems to have been a first draft, told in a neutral fashion; later versions were more colorful. Beatrice Hastings assembled several versions of this story, some of which were damaging to HPB. See pages 25-31 of ''Beatrice Hastings and the “[https://www.theosophycanada.com/files/hastings-solovyoff-fraud.pdf Defence of Madame Blavatsky]”'' by Michael Gomes. Some of this material was reprinted in Daniel H. Caldwell's compilation, ''A Casebook of Encounters with the Theosophical Mahatmas'', published in 2020 by the Blavatsky Study Center/Blavatsky Archives.
