Summary
Description
The Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated: masthead. Decorative masthead with the title, two standing figures, skulls, books, scientific and artistic instruments, a central phrenological head, and the banners VOL.66. / LIFE ILLUSTRATED. / 1878. The complete graphic and its lower ornaments are retained. The monthly date and issue-number line below the graphic is excluded. The artwork matches both volume 4, page 202, item 2 and volume 7, page 31, item 1. The former album cutting is dated March 1878, whole 471; the latter is dated February 1878, whole 470. This file is drawn from the March witness and reused only for the common graphic, not as evidence that the February cutting came from the March issue. The separate Nathan Allen portrait below the source masthead and the Edison portrait on VII31 are outside this crop and are not attributed to it. No individual artist or engraver is established.
From The Phrenological Journal and Life Illustrated, vol. 66, no. 3, March 1878, whole no. 471, the opening page, p. 121 in the issue’s sequence, raw leaf 0. The physical opening page prints the volume, year, month and both issue numbers. The retained scandata has 52 leaves, leaf 1=p. 122 and leaf 14=p. 135; the opening masthead itself has no printed folio. The repository identifier uses a different expanded journal-title form. The printed title above is retained. The first publication and physical copy used for the scrapbook cutting are not established.
Compared directly with H. P. Blavatsky’s Scrapbooks, volume 4, page 202, item 2. The album, its caption, handwriting, notes, transcription and previous sources are unchanged.

File and processing
PNG, 1752 × 576 pixels, grayscale (L). Complete input: 2264 × 3400 pixels, 592563 bytes, SHA-256 ea12cda612ef44ee68ead8e99e9ff2b14f4c29a8d88a7cb4752615a0e2ab3375.
Crop (220, 250)–(2000, 910) in the complete page. One bicubic alignment correction of 1.250698 degrees counterclockwise, measured from the robust upper envelope of the wavy issue divider below the masthead. Final trim (14, 24)–(1766, 600); right and bottom bounds are exclusive. No added canvas is retained. Original grayscale values, print and scan marks remain. No enlargement, colourization, tonal correction, sharpening, retouching or reconstruction was applied. PNG compression is lossless; the input is a JP2 access scan. A natural-paper-colour witness remains a future quality target.
