Editor's notes

  1. ↑ The National Secular Society and the Theosophical Society by unknown author, Philosophic Inquirer, The, v. 5, No. 24, Madras, Sunday, June 11, 1882; printed page number not preserved. The article distinguishes the Theosophical Society from the National Secular Society and argues that Colonel Olcott's personal religious views do not bind the Society. The complete item is mounted on this scrapbook page.
  2. ↑ Hints on Esoteric Theosophy by unknown author, Philosophic Inquirer, The, v. 5, No. 24, Madras, Sunday, June 11, 1882; printed page number not preserved. A review of the first pamphlet in the Hints on Esoteric Theosophy series, issued under the authority of the Theosophical Society. The review begins here and ends on scrapbook page 162 before the Correspondence heading.
  3. ↑ Mme. Blavatsky has written a letter to Mr. Rugoonath Rao... by unknown author, Mahratta, The, Sunday, June 11, 1882; printed page number not preserved. The notice reports that H. P. Blavatsky wrote to Rugoonath Rao against child marriage and the enforced celibacy of Hindu widows. The clipped masthead prints only Sunday, June 11; the year is established by the adjacent dated 1882 material and the matching calendar, not by a visible year in this clipping.
  4. ↑ About the middle of last month, Colonel Olcott and Madame Blavatsky visited Nellore... by unknown author, Indian Mirror, The, Calcutta, Saturday, June 24, 1882; printed page number not preserved. The report says that Olcott and Blavatsky convened a meeting at Nellore attended by educated Hindus and that about thirty attendees became Theosophists. The clipping is complete.
  5. ↑ A New Religion Come to Grief by unknown author, Newspaper clipping; exact periodical and issue date not established. A hostile account of the Theosophical Society and its founders. A handwritten scrapbook note appears to read “Philadelphia Times, June 3,” but no independently matching issue or text has been found, and the year is not written in the note; the attribution is therefore not entered as established source metadata. The article continues and ends on scrapbook page 162.
