Expulsion of Mr. Hurrichand Chintaman from the Arya Samaj of Bombay
The following has been sent to us for publication by the Secretary of the Bombay Arya Samaj. We do so without hesitation, but also without a comment. It is for Mr. Harichand Chintaman to dispute the truth of charges brought so methodically against him. We give the proceedings a foremost place in our journal, for we believe that they are of great importance to the Arya Samajists of all India and to Hindoos generally. We give them as they are, without the slightest alteration and correction.
PROCEEDINGS OF AN EXTRAORDINARY
GENERAL MEETING OF THE MEMBERS
OF THE ARYA SAMAJA (BOMBAY) HELD
ON THE 15TH DAY OF THE VADYA HALF
OF PHALGUNA OF THE SAMWAT YEAR
1935, THAT IS, 22ND DAY OF MARCH 1879.
Before the regular proceedings of the meeting were opened, Mr. Mulji first proposed that as the meeting was held for transacting ordinary private business of the Samaj it was not competent for those, who were not members, to sit at the proceedings of the meeting which he asserted was not a public one, and that, therefore, outsiders would do well to retire from the place of the meeting. The proposal of Mr. Muljee was seconded by Mr. Sevaklal as objected to by the President Mr. Harichand Chintaman who was supported by Mr. Balajee Sitaram Kothare and two others. This conduct of the President dissatisfied nearly all the members present and they in a body objected to the outsiders being present. Thereupon Mr. Harichand, without consulting the members, requested outsiders to retire. The President afterwards called upon the Samaj Secretary Mr. Pranjivandas Kandas to explain the reason of his having convened the meeting. Mr. Pranjivandas said he was secretary of the meeting for three years past and that under Chapter III. Section 7 of the rules of the Samaj he had called the meeting in compliance with a requisition signed by 15 members of the Samaj. This explanation did not satisfy the President and Mr. Mulji placed the section in question before him. Even this was disregarded by the President and without citing any rule in support of his contention he began to make an irrelevant disquisition. Mr. Kalyanjee Narayen spoke that the meeting was rightly convened by the Secretary under the aforesaid rule, and that, therefore, the regular proceedings of the meeting should be formally condemned. He was supported in this by Mr. Devjee Damodar and several others. The President, however, childishly persisted in his contention which <... continues on page 8-184 >
