The Rev. Mr. C. W. Park’s Final Reply.

American Marathi Mission,
Publication Department.
Dnyanodaya Office,
Mahableshwar, June 5th, 1879.
A. F. TURNER, Esq.,
Solicitor, High Court, Bombay.

Sir,

Your letter of the 3rd instant in reply to mine of May 26th, has just been received.

In reply I would say that I shall be very glad to insert in the next issue of the Dnyanodaya Col. Olcott’s letter which was published in the Times of India of May 13th, together with an expression of regret for the article in our issue of May 15th of which Col. Olcott complains.

As the Dnyanodaya is published every Thursday, the republication of Col. Olcott’s letter to the Times cannot be effected until the 12th instant. I take it for granted that it is the wish of your client to have his letter translated into Marathi, the language in which the article complained of was published, though you do not state this in your letter; I shall accordingly have the translation made, as it is only in this way that the Marathi readers can be made aware of the retraction.

Yours faithfully,
(Signed.)   C. W. PARK,
Editor, Dnyanodaya.

postscriptum.

Since the above was in type the Overland Mail has brought the latest issue of the Colonial Empire and Star of India in which appears a complete apology and retraction of its recent libellous paragraph upon Col. Olcott. It runs as follows:—

“Col. H. S. Olcott.

“A paragraph recently appeared in the “Echoes from Abroad” column of the Colonial Empire and Star of India, reflecting upon the character of this American gentleman who is at present in India, and it was copied in the Times of India and other Indian papers. We are anxious to assure Col. Olcott that the substance of the paragraph in question was taken from the columns of an American paper, and inserted inadvertently. From the letter which Col. Olcott has addressed to the Times of India, and from the assurance we have received from a gentleman of high position in London, we do not hesitate in expressing our belief that the statements made in the objectionable paragraph are entirely without foundation. We therefore take the earliest opportunity of assuring Col. Olcott and those to whom it refers that we much regret its insertion.”

Editor's notes

  1. ↑ The Rev. Mr. C. W. Park’s Final Reply. by Park, C. W. (signed as C. W. Park), Mahableshwar, June 5, 1879. Includes the printed “POSTSCRIPTUM.” and its quotation from the latest issue of the Colonial Empire and Star of India; the exact issue is not identified in the clipping.
  2. ↑ Theosophical Chariot upsetting all them who thought of sitting on it. by unknown author. The handwritten labels, probably in H. P. Blavatsky’s hand, present an ironic scene: the Theosophical Society’s chariot overturns the Rev. C. W. Park and his newspaper, Dnyanodaya.
  3. ↑ Probably in HPB’s handwriting. The word “of” is inserted above the line.
