Tibullus, Albius. Roman poet, b. ca. 54; d. ca. 19 b.c. Belonged to the equestrian order. Accompanied Messala in 31 on a campaign in Aquitanian Gaul. From there he set out with him to the East; forced through ill health to remain behind at Corcyra. Henceforth lived on his estate between Tibur and Praeneste. Horace was warmly attached to him. Four books of *Elegies are attributed to him; these poems are among the most perfect of their kind, of agreeable simplicity, tender feeling, and free from any prolixity; descriptive of nature and the joys of family life. Editions of text: Bärens (Leipzig, 1878); Hiller (ib., 1885); Lachmann (1829); Müller (1885); Postgate (1906). Transí, by Cranstoun (1872).
