23. The sub-joined correspondence may serve to warn laymen and upstart Bodies and Priests against the folly of setting up their conceit against the established professional church. European Theosophists or Brahmans are modest enough to write “I became a vegetarian. No one will ever get any good out of the knowing who does not become their chela which involves the abandonment of one’s own personal responsibility.

Purify your bodies, awaken your souls, wipe out considerations of worldly affairs, cross the ocean of the manifated universe. One seeking to acquire knowledge (of the Vedas and Smrities in respect of the Hindu) must not be combative and petious. He must not be self-willed and impatient. He will find little difficulty in following blindfold, as any one but imperfectly acquainted with the mysteries must be. I know enough to realise some of the embarrassments in which they are placed as regards affording helps.” What is said here of the occult Brotherhood is true ''pari passu'' of the Hindu esoteric church-reformers build castles in the air by their contempt of mysteries and their unostentatious custodians.

Your kind favor of the 11th. Brother Mr. Hume’s letters themselves bear undoubted evidence of “his intellectual comprehension of occult philosophy.” which he must have acquired from his teachers and which puts to shame even a Brahman Pandit. My inquiry related only to the progress of my electic Brothers in practical occultism.” That is “The Veda sa kalpam” and this “the Vedas sa rahasyam.” That can be published to the world as you are so philanthropically publishing it, and this is what a ''disceplined chela'' expects. The ''obligations'' taken by members are unmeaning and unfruitful at present. Before entering on practical occultism which as you justly say means a sacrifice of earthly considerations (see the second verse of Manu I published in the last Theosophist) we should be favored with ''Material helps to make the sacrifice.'' These material helps are called ''mani'' and ''anshadham'' aiding personal efforts called Mantram and Acharam. They are occult charms and medical compositions to cure and prevent bodily ailments, to support against privations to keep off serpents, mad dogs, tigers, &c., or to render their bite innocuous, &c., &c. I shall hereafter call a student of occult philosophy a Pandit-chela, and of practical occultism as Priest-chela. An adept is a Pandit-Priest and is the professor of both ''science'' and ''Art'' so to say. ''Gnanam'' and Kriya have become in worldly churches disjoined, corrupted and perverted. Jesus or Sankarachari could preach as well as practice, but now a spurious Pandit hires a spurious Priest and both together make sad havoc of the moral and spiritual welfare of mankind. The Eclectic society will benefit the world by correcting the Pandits and Preachers of the dead letter including forgeries only to a very limited extent unless the intellectual in sight is followed up by priest-chelas to practically convince themselves and the world. The adept brothers are in a position to favor either class of chelas with ''Mani'' and ''anshadham'' effecting wonderful cures, and I hear occasionally of such chelas turning up to cure a desperate case of consumption or dropsy, of snake-bite or hydrophobia, of deafness or paralysis, &c., &c. Science, art, and these helps fail of effect in the hands of selfish men applying them for professional gain, but I respectfully think that the Eclectic society should seek and receive such presents from the Brothers. They will facilitate the yogic development of clairvoyance and Tamadhi too. My wish is to avoid the fault of not seeking and asking, though the giving is left to the superior wisdom of the Gurus.
