{{Style S-Small capitals|Every}} newspaper in the country has been printing a libel on Secularism first published in the name of the Bishop of Manchester. It has been asserted that Secularists thought to use the coarse language of the original, that a “man might live tally with a woman, and send her away if she become sick or otherwise unpleasant.” No such doctrine has ever been taught by Secularists, and challenged to prove the statement, the Bishop of Manchester said that it was his opinion that there would be nothing to prevent such conduct if people gave up belief in God, and in a future life wherein they would be held accountable for actions here. It does not say much for the ennobling and civilising effects of the religion of Christ if, after eighteen centuries, those brought up in its midst can only be kept from filthiness of life by “the fear of hell, the hangman’s whip.” Men and women have not been taught by Christinaty to love purity, but only to fear hell, and the natural result is that a bishop of a Christian church fears a deluge of wickedness if men lose faith in punishment after death. What a confession of the degrading results of the Christian creed!
