Archibald Keightley

(9 April 1859 − 18 November 1930)

(1859–1930)

English physician and Theosophist, a member of H. P. Blavatsky’s Inner Group in London. Married the writer Julia Keightley, known as Jasper Niemand.

Bibliographical references include: “A Law of Life: Karma,” Lucifer, Vol. I, September and October, 1887 (BCW 8:461).

English Theosophist and physician, one of the most faithful friends of H. P. B. in the London days (BCW 9:427-432).

See Vol. IX, Bibliogr. Index, for comprehensive biographical sketch (BCW 11:579).

Became president pro tempore of the British Section of the Theosophical Society in October 1888. On 27 November he visited the Dublin Lodge with W. Q. Judge, who was in Europe on Esoteric Section business. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 10:xxvi-xxvii)

In January 1895 attested that he had seen the manuscript Book of Rules in W. Q. Judge’s handwriting with H. P. Blavatsky’s additions. B. de Zirkoff also reports the attribution to him of The Meaning of a Pledge, published in Lucifer in September 1888. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 12:484, BCW 12:506)

According to B. Keightley’s reminiscences, helped prepare a typescript of The Secret Doctrine and devise the plan adopted by H. P. Blavatsky for two volumes of three parts each. The original manuscript was sealed and returned to her; she set remaining fragments aside for a possible third volume. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 14:xxxiv-xxxvi)
