Summary

Description

The Intruding Camel, illustration signed CHURCH by Frederick Stuart Church (1842–1924), with its printed fable and moral. Matching printed composition in Fables by G. Washington Aesop (George Thomas Lanigan), New York: The World, 1878, printed p. 9.

The complete printed layout corresponds to HPB-SB-4-140, image item 5 and adjoining fable item 6, and to the existing example on HPB-SB-4-166. HPB-SB-4-202, item 1, preserves the upper scene and left border figure; the later overlaid newspaper masthead, manuscript additions and other album materials are not part of the original fable. The museum impression and the album share the fine rain lines, camel fur and hoof details, tent, small pyramid, lower umbrella figure, Church signature and printed lettering. The book is a matching printed witness; no claim is made that the physical album clipping was cut from this particular museum copy.

Rights

CC0: the exact printed-object page marks both Restrictions & Rights and this specific media as CC0. Its image-specific usage notice expressly permits copying, modifying and distributing the image without contacting the Smithsonian. See the image's CC0 control, Smithsonian Terms of Use and CC0 1.0. Metadata usage is separately marked CC0.

The delivered 2018 JPEG still carries an older restrictive IPTC notice. The original file and that metadata are retained unchanged in the source evidence. The current institution-supplied, image-specific CC0 notice is recorded separately; permission is not inferred from another photograph or sketch. Attribution is retained as a courtesy and for provenance.

File and processing

Lossless RGB PNG, 1590 × 2440 pixels, retaining the natural paper colour and the original ICC profile. Native museum JPEG 4485 × 5406 pixels, 13,420,673 bytes, SHA-256 123e2d12e6c4c798bb3c397af30e6ef598d676d53431171371ff8fd45a2b00da. Original retained unchanged. One 0.757030976° counterclockwise BICUBIC rotation on the full canvas without expansion, followed by crop (1140, 1280)–(2730, 3720), right and bottom exclusive. The angle balances the two long outer-frame verticals; minor original paper curvature is preserved without perspective reconstruction. Full printed frame, both figures, title, fable, moral and Church signature retained. Blank museum mounting, binding and the museum accession annotation outside the mounted print are excluded; they remain in the linked complete photograph. Independent pixel replay and an all-255 support mask checked. No enlargement, sharpening, contrast or colour change, retouching, colourization or reconstruction.
