Misrepresentation
In desolate dreams, whose memory terrific, |
Sad years have flown, but still to me are vivid |
The bleeding palms and feet, the blonde beard tangled, |
But marked with stupor that no sign of meekness |
And he whose pure, imperishable glory, |
And with vindictive voice upon me calling; |
Which, were it known, and could mankind conceive it, |
For in this tale of sacrifice and error, |

“Then I, than earth’s most noble bards was greater, |
“And I remember those departed glories, |
“And when with my disciples, friends and leaders, |
“With John beside me, Matthew, James and Peter, |
“And I recall those nights when, charmed, I listened |
“Alas! the enchantment passed, while fast and faster |
“Yet faith had utterly and blindly filled me, |
“From rabid bodies I had cast forth demons, |
