Fulvio Orsini

(8 November 1529 − 8 November 1600)

Italian antiquarian, librarian and scholar (1529–1600), librarian to the Farnese family in Rome and an expert on ancient coins, gems, inscriptions and statues. Compiled Imagines et Elogia Virorum Illustrium (first published Rome, 1570; the 1606 Antwerp edition by the Plantin-Moretus press contained 167 engraved portraits of ancient Greek and Latin philosophers, poets, orators and scholars, with biographical notes). His description of an engraved Carnelian portrait of Plato, from that work, was reprinted — under the Latinized form of his name, "Fulvius Ursinus" — as "Portrait of Plato in Carnelian Stone" in The Path (July 1886). Not connected with the Theosophical Society, which postdates him by three centuries.
