Prepared from a microfilm printout of the manuscript. B. de Zirkoff changed the spelling Boutlerof to Butleroff, the form preferred by H. P. Blavatsky in later documents. (BCW editors, BCW 14:497) +
B. de Zirkoff links it with The Substantial Nature of Magnetism and tentatively assigns it to the same period, 1887–1888; the exact date is uncertain. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 8:333, BCW 8:315) +
One fragment survives in the Adyar archives in an autograph marked page 4. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:357) +
The unfinished autograph is preserved in the Adyar archives; first published in the April 1962 Theosophist, pp. 8–13. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:307) +
The manuscript was signed at Ostend on 3 October 1886 in reply to M. M. Chatterji and A. Gebhard’s statement of 23 September. The first page is missing; its opening was restored from a typescript, and C. Jinarajadasa supplied the title. It first appeared in The Theosophist in June–September 1924 and again in August 1931. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 7:135-140) +
First published in the Banner of Light on 30 March 1878 and revised for The Theosophist in April 1883. B. de Zirkoff tentatively regards the Russian Cave of Ozerki in Rebus in January 1886 as Blavatsky’s own translation. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 6:354-355) +
The autograph is preserved in the Adyar archives. First published in the August 1962 Theosophist, pp. 287–301. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:326) +
Present in the first draft of The Secret Doctrine sent to Adyar in 1886. The Collected Writings text incorporates additional paragraphs from that draft; related material appears in sections 2–3 of the 1897 third volume of The Secret Doctrine. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:224) +
Published in the October 1891 Lucifer, pp. 95–99. Its reference to Paris leads B. de Zirkoff to place its composition provisionally in July 1889. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:221) +
Published in three instalments of Lucifer and left unfinished. According to B. de Zirkoff, the promised continuation explaining Pistis Sophia was not carried out. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 8:217, BCW 8:218-219,239)
B. de Zirkoff notes passages identical with pp. 167–168 of the posthumous third volume of The Secret Doctrine. He suggests that some remaining manuscripts may have been intended to continue this unfinished series, without treating that hypothesis as proven. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 14:xxxvi-xxxvii) +
An unsigned, undated manuscript apparently sent to W. Q. Judge in 1888–1889, during the rapid expansion of the Blavatsky Lodge in London. First published in The Theosophical Forum, vol. XXVI, January 1948. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 12:59) +
First published in the posthumous third volume of The Secret Doctrine (1897), pp. 234–240. B. de Zirkoff identifies it tentatively as the material referred to in H. P. Blavatsky’s Animated Statues; some passages were incorporated into the 1888 Secret Doctrine. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 7:226-227, BCW 7:230) +
First published in Lucifer in May 1892. B. de Zirkoff considers composition around 1886–1887 likely; the material quoted places it no earlier than 1885, but the exact date is unknown. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 7:250) +
Pages 117-121 and 156-171 largely match the second instalment of Dialogue Between the Two Editors. B. de Zirkoff also connects this material with Thakur’s conversation with his companions in From the Caves and Jungles of Hindostan, published in February 1886. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 10:217-218)
The first edition was issued in London about July 1889 by the Theosophical Publishing Company and printed by Allen, Scott & Co. Its 307 pages had neither glossary nor index. A glossary was added in the second edition of 1890, largely drawing on the Theosophical Glossary then in preparation. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 11:365) +
Reproduced in the Collected Writings from a faithful transcription of the autograph fragment in the Adyar archives. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:324) +
The series remained unfinished: B. de Zirkoff found no continuation beyond the instalments in Lucifer for March and May 1889. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 11:101) +
Announced in January 1884 as a new version of Isis Unveiled; the first instalment promised for March did not appear. In December 1884 the introduction and first chapter were reported to be in type. H. S. Olcott’s diary records receipt of a new plan for the work on 9 January 1885. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 6:184-186, BCW 6:xxxvii,xl)
The first volume came off the press on 20 October 1888, as recorded in R. Harte’s copy. Mailing to American subscribers began on 3 November. The second English impression used the same plates and was not a revised second edition; the advertised glossary was not included. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 10:157-159, BCW 10:13, BCW 10:344)
The posthumous third volume edited by A. Besant in 1897, subtitled Occultism, contains heterogeneous material, including portions of the early Würzburg manuscript and esoteric instructions. B. de Zirkoff considers it unproven that this compilation corresponds to the third volume envisaged by H. P. Blavatsky. In the Collected Writings its contents are distributed among volumes VII, XII, XIII and XIV; the instructions are restored to their original wording. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 14:xxv-xliv, BCW 14:xxv; BCW editors, BCW 14:1, BCW 14:3)
B. de Zirkoff places composition after January 1887 and probably before publication of The Secret Doctrine in autumn 1888. The exact date is unknown. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 8:315) +
An unfinished manuscript by H. P. Blavatsky in the Adyar Archives consists of four foolscap pages; its continuation is missing. C. Jinarajadasa supplied the title when publishing it in The Theosophist in December 1925. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 6:315) +
The unfinished Russian manuscript is preserved at Adyar. According to V. P. de Zhelihovsky, it was written shortly before H. P. Blavatsky’s final illness. Z. de Álgya-Pap’s English translation appeared in the September 1961 Theosophist; the Russian original in the Boston journal Alba in 1962. The Collected Writings translation incorporates adjustments based on the Russian original. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 13:209) +
