Rast Goftar
(Bombay, India)
(1851-)
An Anglo-Gujarati newspaper of the Parsi (Zoroastrian) community, published in Bombay. It was founded in 1851 (the first issue appeared in 1854) by Dadabhai Naoroji and Kharshedji Cama as an organ of social reform among the Parsis; its founding was prompted by riots between Parsis and Muslims over the publication of a depiction of the Prophet Muhammad. Its Persian title means "truthful speech" or "the truth-teller." From 1861 it was published together with the absorbed Satya Prakash ("True Light"), a paper founded in 1852 by Karsandas Mulji. It was edited by Kaikhosro Nowroji Kabraji from 1864 to 1904. (WP)
A Parsi newspaper which published a strong attack on H. S. Olcott; a correspondent’s report of it prompted a reply by H. P. Blavatsky. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 4:33)
