Adi-Granth
(Eastern Punjabi: ਗੁਰੂ ਗ੍ਰੰਥ ਸਾਹਿਬ, IAST: gurū granth sāhib)
The sacred book of the Sikh Gurus, a compilation of the utterances of the early Vaishnava saints (Bhagats), from whom Nanak, founder of the Sikh faith, took his doctrines. Compiled about 1600 by Arjan, the fifth Guru, and written in the Gurmukhi script, it sets forth the original pietistic form of the Sikh creed, before it assumed its militant character. (BCW 1:443). Sacred scripture of the Sikhs. De Zirkoff lists Gopal Singh's annotated English translation, Sri Guru-Granth Sahib (Delhi, 1960), and Max Arthur Macauliffe's The Sikh Religion (London, 1909). (BCW 3:510).
