Joseph-Maria Amiot
French Jesuit missionary in China (1718-1793), a student of Chinese music, languages and culture. Much of his work was published in the Mémoires concernant l’histoire, les sciences, les arts… des Chinois; he also compiled a Manchu-French dictionary. (BCW 7:356).
