Ludwig Büchner
(German: Friedrich Karl Christian Ludwig Büchner)

(29 September 1824 − 1 May 1899)

German philosopher and physician, a leading figure of 19th-century scientific materialism. Studied at Giessen, Strasbourg, Würzburg and Vienna; became lecturer in medicine at Tübingen in 1852, where he published his principal work, Kraft und Stoff (Force and Matter, 1855), whose extreme materialism provoked such opposition that he was compelled to resign his post.
