Battle of Mentana
A battle fought near Rome on 3 November 1867 between Garibaldi’s volunteers and Franco-Papal forces. (Comune di Mentana: 157 anni della nostra storia)
According to her own account, H. P. Blavatsky took part in the battle and was wounded; she denied the newspaper claim that she had served on Garibaldi’s staff. (BCW 1:55)
She also explicitly affirmed her presence during the battle in “Mr. A. Lillie’s Delusions”, and mentioned Mentana in letters 60 and 61 to A. P. Sinnett. (BCW 6:277-278) (H. P. Blavatsky to A. P. Sinnett, Letter 60 (mid-April 1886); H. P. Blavatsky to A. P. Sinnett, Letter 61 (mid-January 1886))
Dating note: her recollections sometimes give October 1867, and the general outline in BCW 1 gives 2 November; the historical date of 3 November is used here. Her participation and wounds are presented as her testimony, not as an independently established military record. (BCW 6:277-278) (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 1:xlvii)
