Marie François Xavier Bichat

French physiologist and anatomist (1771-1802), a pupil of P. J. Desault. He developed the study of the body’s elementary tissues and distinguished organic from animal functions; his works include Recherches physiologiques sur la vie et la mort and Anatomie générale. (BCW 6:427-428).
