The Civil and Military Gazette
(Lahore, Punjab, British India)

(1872-1963)

A daily English-language newspaper published in Lahore (and, at various periods, also in Simla and Karachi). It was formed in 1872 by the merger of The Mofussilite of Calcutta with the Lahore Chronicle and Indian Public Opinion and Panjab Times; from 1876 it appeared as a daily. It covered political, military and general news for the colonial civil and military readership of British India. From 1882 to 1887 Rudyard Kipling served as its assistant editor, and many of the stories later collected in Plain Tales from the Hills were first published in its pages. Publication ceased in 1963.
