Marcus Dods

(11 April 1834 − 26 April 1909)

Scottish Presbyterian theologian and biblical scholar. Born at Belford, Northumberland, on 11 April 1834; died at Edinburgh on 26 April 1909. He was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland and became principal of New College, Edinburgh, in 1907. (Dictionary of National Biography, 1912 supplement: Dods, Marcus)

His translation of Augustine was included in Philip Schaff's Select Library of the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers. (BCW 8:435) In the second volume of the First Series he is credited with the translation of The City of God. Schaff's editorial preface reproduces a letter from Dods dated 23 November 1886; On Christian Doctrine in the same volume was translated by J. F. Shaw, not Dods. (Philip Schaff, Editor's Preface, Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, First Series, volume II)

Editorial note: the life dates in the BCW entry require clarification. BCW gives 1786-1838, the dates of the translator's father, also Marcus Dods; the translator's dates are 1834-1909. (Dictionary of National Biography: Dods, Marcus (1786-1838); 1912 supplement: Dods, Marcus (1834-1909))
