Formation of the Theosophical Society

The founding of the Society was preceded by discussion of the idea at an August gathering at H. P. Blavatsky’s home. This occasion should be distinguished from the meeting of 7 September and the inauguration of 17 November 1875. Recollections of the circumstances of the founding do not entirely agree (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 1:121-124).
