Prince Alexander Mihaylovich Gorchakov

(16 July 1798 − 11 March 1883)

Russian statesman. Entered foreign office under Count Nesselrode. Appointed, 1856, minister of foreign affairs in place of Nesselrode. Became Chancellor and was, for a time, the most powerful minister in Europe. At the congress of Berlin, 1878, at the end of the Russo-Turkish campaign, the aged chancellor held nominally the post of first plenipotentiary, but left to Count Shuvalov the odium for the concessions which Russia had to make to Great Britain and Austria. (BCW 1:464). (BCW 2:392)
