(English: Robert Hare)

(17 January 1781 − 15 May 1858)

American chemist. Discovered, 1801, the oxy-hydrogen blow-pipe, which led to the founding of the platinum industry. Elected, 1816, Prof. of Chemistry at the Univ. of Penna. One of the first eminent men of science who, setting out to expose the delusions of Spiritualism, became a firm believer instead; embodied his research in *Experimental Investigation of the Spirit Manifestations (1855), which led to a disgraceful persecution of him by the professors of Harvard and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. (BCW 1:467-468).

His Experimental Investigation of the Spirit Manifestations was published in New York by Partridge & Brittan in 1855, with 460 pages and two portraits. (BCW 3:510).

The appendix directs the reader to a biographical sketch elsewhere in the collected writings. (BCW 4:651).
