Kotahena riots of 1883
An attack by a Catholic crowd on a Buddhist procession in Colombo caused numerous injuries and one death. The Buddhist Defence Committee appointed H. S. Olcott to present its grievances in London; he left for Europe with H. P. Blavatsky and companions on 20 February 1884. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 5:287) S. Prothero dates the Kotahena clash to 25 March 1883. The date of 29 March printed by B. de Zirkoff differs from this dating. (Stephen Prothero, The White Buddhist: Kotahena, 25 March 1883)
