The Lancet
(London, England)
(5 October 1823 − Error: Invalid time.)
A weekly peer-reviewed general medical journal, one of the best known, oldest, and most authoritative general medical journals. Founded in 1823 by the English surgeon Thomas Wakley, and still published today.
About the title:
A lancet can be a surgical instrument or a narrow pointed window. Historian Michael Brown discusses the title’s associations with both cutting into abuses and admitting light. He cautions that the often-repeated wording attributed to Thomas Wakley, combining these images, may be apocryphal. Michael Brown, “‘Bats, Rats and Barristers’”
