The Ensouled Violin
The story survives in an early short version and a later expanded version. The latter appeared in Lucifer in March-April 1892 and in Nightmare Tales. B. de Zirkoff allows for authorship of the early text by Hilarion or collaboration between him and H. P. Blavatsky. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 2:219, BCW 2:229) The authorship of the early version was debated in The Theosophist in 1940. Arya Asanga suggested that H. P. Blavatsky had written it, using Hilarion’s name as a pseudonym or to acknowledge the source of the story. M. K. Neff replied that the printed attribution should be taken literally and defended Hilarion’s contribution to the early version. (Arya Asanga, Two Notes: The Ensouled Violin, The Theosophist, April 1940, pp. 74-75; M. K. Neff, The Ensouled Violin, The Theosophist, December 1940, pp. 252-255)
