Alexei Nikolayevich Tseretelev

(1 November 1848 − 1 November 1883)

Russian diplomat and prince of Georgian descent (1848–1883). He served in the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878 and became consul-general at Philippopolis (now Plovdiv) in 1878. He helped prepare the Organic Statute of Eastern Rumelia and died at Lipyagi, Tambov province, on 16 May 1883 (Old Style). (Russian Biographical Dictionary: Tseretelev, Alexei Nikolayevich (Russian); Diplomatic Service Veterans Foundation: A. N. Tseretelev (Russian))

He is a possible identification of the A. Tzeretelef to whom B. de Zirkoff attributes the mirror experiment discussed by H. P. Blavatsky. The identification with the diplomat remains unproven. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 2:435)

The first publication is signed “Prince A. Tzeretelef”, but its narrator is named Yurey Ivanovitch Tanishef. The diplomat’s biography therefore should not be equated with the narrator’s story. (The Bewitched Mirror, The Theosophist, June 1880, p. 230)
