Ugolino della Gherardesca

Count of Donoratico and a participant in the struggle for power in Pisa; captured by Archbishop Ruggieri, he died of starvation in confinement in 1289. Dante portrayed him in the Inferno. The story that he ate his children is a legend. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 9:94)
