Constantin Francois Chassebeuf, Comte de Volney
(3 February 1757 − 25 April 1820)
French scholar, writer and traveller. Spent about four years in Egypt and Syria, publishing an account of his travels in 1787, and sat in both the Estates-General and the Constituent Assembly. His 1791 essay on the philosophy of history, Les Ruines, ou méditations sur les révolutions des empires, attempted to apply his political and economic theories, including a practical application in Corsica. Imprisoned during the Jacobin Terror but escaped execution; later travelled to the United States, where he was suspected of being a French spy, before returning to France and becoming a member of the Institute. (BCW 1:530).
