Dr. Alexander Wilder
(14 May 1823 − 8 September 1908)
American physician, author and Platonic scholar. A largely self-taught polymath who began teaching school at fifteen, he trained in medicine partly out of scepticism toward contemporary medical practice, received his M.D. from Syracuse Medical College in 1850, and worked for some years as a journal editor before devoting himself increasingly to Platonism and Hermetic philosophy, influenced by Swedenborg and by General Hitchcock's writings on alchemy. He helped organize the American Akademe philosophical society in 1883 and translated Iamblichus's On the Mysteries of the Egyptians. He contributed substantial material to the "Before the Veil" section of Isis Unveiled and remained a staunch friend of both H.P.B. and Col. Olcott. (BCW 1:531-533).
