(1821–1906)
Scottish homeopathic physician (1821-1906), interested in mesmerism and psychical research. He became president of the British branch of the Theosophical Society but resigned in 1882 over religious differences. He was also a founding member and first-council member of the Society for Psychical Research, and wrote Theosophy and the Higher Life. (BCW 3:538-539).
In the preface to the second edition of his book on Theosophy, explained that he left the Theosophical Society after finding that H. P. Blavatsky did not recognise a personal God. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 3:53)
B. de Zirkoff records his election as vice-president of the London branch on 7 January 1883. This requires reconciliation with accounts of his resignation from the Society in 1882. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 4:xxv, BCW 4:xxvii)
His critical letter on A. P. Sinnett’s Esoteric Buddhism appeared in Light on 21 July 1883. H. P. Blavatsky’s reply and a protest originally signed by more than five hundred Indian Theosophists appeared there on 27 October. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 5:329, BCW 5:334)
