Alice Leighton Cleather

(1846–1938)

English Theosophist, a member of H. P. Blavatsky’s Inner Group. Wrote the series “Theosophy in Western Lands” for The Theosophist from March 1890, reporting on activities at the London headquarters.

In her Letter from London dated February 1891 she announced the second part of the Transactions of the Blavatsky Lodge and an expected third part; the letter appeared in the April Theosophist, p. 438. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 10:299)

In H. P. Blavatsky: A Great Betrayal (1922), p. 75, reported seeing manuscript sheets used for the posthumous third volume of The Secret Doctrine with extensive alterations, including those in A. Besant’s and G. R. S. Mead’s hands. B. de Zirkoff compares this testimony with Mead’s statements that he did not edit the main body of the volume. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 14:xxxviii)
