(6 July 1856 − 24 June 1890)

(1856–1890)

Indian lawyer, scholar of Advaita Vedanta and early member of the Theosophical Society. He practised law at Madras and contributed articles on Hindu philosophy to The Theosophist.

Author of Observations on “A Letter Addressed to the Fellows of the London Lodge of The Theosophical Society…”, a 45-page reply published at the Scottish Press, Madras, in January 1884. (BCW 5:382).

De Zirkoff lists his observations on Kingsford and Maitland’s letter to the London Lodge (Madras, January 1884) and the Esoteric Writings collected by Tookaram Tatya (1895; revised and enlarged, 1931). (BCW 6:447).

The appendix cites Notes on the Bhagavad-Gita and refers to page 284 of the volume. (BCW 7:398).

His Notes on the Bhagavad-Gita originated as lectures delivered at the Adyar conventions of 1885 and 1886 (BCW 8:475).

The bibliography lists Notes on the Bhagavad-Gita and refers to BCW volume 8, page 475, for further information (BCW 11:589).

His Esoteric Writings were collected by Tookaram Tatya and published in 1895, with an enlarged edition in 1931. The bibliography also lists Notes on the Bhagavad-Gita (BCW 10:428).

Author of “The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac” and an article on Aryan-Arhat teachings concerning the sevenfold human constitution, both annotated by H. P. Blavatsky. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 3:325-327, BCW 3:400)

First met H. P. Blavatsky and H. S. Olcott at Madras in April 1882 and became corresponding secretary of the Madras Theosophical Society. Reviewed W. Oxley’s The Philosophy of Spirit from esoteric and Brahmanical standpoints. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 4:xxiii-xxiv, BCW 4:99, BCW 4:563)

Was initially expected to supply commentaries for H. P. Blavatsky’s Secret Doctrine. In 1886 criticised the portions of the manuscript sent to him in India: according to B. de Zirkoff, his objections to its diffuse and chaotic presentation prompted Blavatsky to recast the text. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 5:267-272, BCW 5:135-138)

H. P. Blavatsky added four notes to his reply to A. Kingsford and E. Maitland and forwarded it to M. M. Chatterji on 27 January 1884. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 6:131-132)

B. de Zirkoff’s chronological survey places his resignation from the Theosophical Society in June 1888 and connects it partly with the controversy over publication of The Secret Doctrine. (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 9:xxiv-xxv)

B. de Zirkoff identifies T. Subba Row as the writer of the editorial note signed T. S. appended to Esoteric Buddhism and Hinduism in The Theosophist, June 1884, pp. 223-225. It was included in the second edition of his Esoteric Writings (1931). (B. de Zirkoff, BCW 10:180)
